The Open Pits Department at NSR has newly created opportunities for highly experienced Maintenance Superintendents to join the team. Flying out of Perth, these roles will work an 8&6 roster on a permanent & full-time basis, across the Thunderbox region.

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the mobile fleet maintenance operations, which includes providing leadership and direction to major maintenance contractors and subcontractors, to ensure the availability and reliability of essential mobile equipment, as well as supporting them with maintenance planning, execution, and troubleshooting to ensure safe, efficient and uninterrupted mining activities.

Leadership and Supervision:

  • Support and supervise a team of mobile maintenance contractor personnel, ensuring adherence to safety standards, work procedures, and company policies.
  • Coordinate the activities of major maintenance contractors and ensure efficient resource utilization, quality of work, and compliance with contractual obligations.
  • Mentor and develop team members through training and performance feedback.

Maintenance Planning and Execution:

  • Support the Development, implementation, and compliance monitoring of the mobile maintenance strategies, including scheduled and unscheduled repairs, to maximize equipment uptime and availability.
  • Ensure that the maintenance schedules are aligned with the mining operations plan, coordinating with site management and other departments to minimize operational downtime.
  • Oversee troubleshooting and fault diagnosis on mobile plant equipment, ensuring effective and timely resolution of issues.

Contractor Management:

  • Manage and monitor the performance of maintenance contractors to ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.
  • Assist with the procurement and mobilization of contractors for major maintenance activities and ensure that they are properly equipped and resourced to meet operational requirements.
  • Evaluate contractor performance regularly, addressing any issues or gaps in service delivery, and implement corrective actions as required.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Champion safety on-site, ensuring all maintenance activities are conducted in line with Northern Star Resources safety policies and procedures.
  • Lead and participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and other safety initiatives to ensure a proactive safety culture within the maintenance team.
  • Monitor compliance with environmental regulations and work to minimize the impact of maintenance activities on the environment.

Resource and Budget Management:

  • Assist with the development of maintenance budgets and ensure that costs are controlled through effective resource management.
  • Monitor and manage the allocation of resources, tools, equipment, and spares to ensure timely execution of maintenance tasks without over-committing resources.
  • Report on key performance indicators (KPIs) relating to maintenance performance, budget adherence, and downtime reduction.

Collaboration with Mining Teams:

  • Work closely with the site mining teams to ensure that mobile equipment is available and ready to meet mining requirements, minimizing delays and optimizing productivity.
  • Provide technical support and advice to mining supervisors and operators regarding equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Communicate effectively with other departments, including operations, planning, and procurement, to ensure seamless integration of maintenance and mining activities.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives within the mobile maintenance department to enhance equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and improve overall operational efficiency.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and innovation, implementing best practices and new technologies where appropriate.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Trade qualification in Mechanical, Electrical, or Heavy Diesel Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Relevant management qualifications or experience in leadership roles within the mining or heavy industry sectors are highly regarded.
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a mobile maintenance role within the mining or heavy industry sectors, with at least 3-5 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Experience managing maintenance contractors, including performance monitoring, negotiations, and managing contracts.
  • Strong understanding of mobile fleet maintenance (e.g., trucks, dozers, loaders, excavators and associated ancillary equipment.) maintenance planning systems, and industry best practices.
  • Proven ability to manage complex maintenance operations in remote locations, with a strong focus on safety, quality, and efficiency.

  • High proficiency in computer-based maintenance management systems (e.g., SAP, JD Edwards) & Microsoft Office Suite.
  • A solid understanding of safety management systems, risk assessment processes, and environmental regulations.
  • Solutions focused; you possess strong analytical & problem-solving skills, with the ability to think strategically & outside the box to ensure successful outcomes are consistently delivered across your remit.
