We have a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our high performing Underground Technical Services team at our KCGM Operations. This opportunity is offered at KCGM Underground Operations on 4/3 roster, 12-hour days, based in Kalgoorlie-Boulder - the heart of the Goldfields. You have the option to stay residential or work FIFO from Perth.

 

Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, the primary role is for the safe management and delivery of all Geotechnical requirements within the Geotechnical Engineering team.

 

Here's what awaits you:

  • Provide practical, risk-based geotechnical advice and direction across planned and active underground mining areas, ensuring appropriate ground support systems are designed and implemented to enable safe and efficient mining.
  • Work closely with the Technical Production team to inform medium-term mine design and stope extraction planning, optimising business outcomes while maintaining geotechnical stability and compliance.
  • Be accountable for the development, maintenance, and ongoing improvement of the underground geotechnical model, ensuring it reflects current geological and geotechnical understanding, as well as the current mining strategy.
  • Collaborate closely with Underground Operations to reconcile geotechnical model assumptions against actual ground performance and observed conditions.
  • Manage the preparation, implementation, and periodic review of the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP) and associated geotechnical standards in accordance with the site Safety Management System and Western Australian mining regulations.
  • Work closely with the Corporate Technical team to develop, maintain, and apply underground numerical and analytical geotechnical models to support medium-term planning and strategic decision-making.
  • Manage and coordinate external geotechnical consultants engaged on specialist studies and technical projects, ensuring scope, quality, and value are achieved.
  • Ensure medium-term geotechnical processes, controls, and design assumptions are embedded within mine planning workflows, operational procedures, and technical deliverables.
  • Lead, mentor, and provide technical guidance to Geotechnical Engineers, supporting capability development and consistent application of geotechnical standards.

 

To thrive in this role, you'll need:

 

Experience: Experience with geotechnical software (Rockscience, IMAT/Flac3D, IMS, MxRap). Experience in numerical modelling will be highly regarded. Extensive Underground geotechnical experience in a mechanised hard-rock underground mine. Awareness of the Work Health & Safety Act and Regulations (desirable).

 

Qualifications: Tertiary Qualifications in Geotechnical Engineering (or equivalent). Current "C" Class Western Australian Drivers Licence (Manual). St Johns Senior First Aid certificate (desirable).
